WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a wireless digital communications system that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". It is a highly flexible standard that allows for - fixed point (multipoint) connectivity such as between your home and a base station where it is regarded an enabling technology to deliver "last mile" wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and xDSL.
- It is also evolving to be able to provide full mobility, this means that you will be able to make phone calls or surf the web as you walk around with a WiMAX phone.
WiMAX operated on both licensed and non licensed frequencies, providing a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers. The standard of WiMAX is IEEE 802.16. It defines the technical features of the communications protocol. The WiMAX Forum was created in June 2001 with the objective of facilitating the deployment of broadband wireless networks based on the IEEE 802.16 standard by ensuring the compatibility and interoperability of broadband wireless equipment.
